Seasonal Kitchen Decor from Countertops to Cabinets
May 03, 2025
Real talk? I was way too obsessed with this topic when I was going through it. My husband definitely got tired of hearing about it. But my loss is your gain.
Here's my philosophy on seasonal kitchen decor from countertops to cabinets: your home should feel like the season without looking like a craft store exploded. A few intentional touches beat a house full of themed stuff every time.
The 5-Item Rule
I don't care what season it is — you only need about 5 seasonal items to transform a room. More than that and you're decorating. Less than that and you're just... placing things.
- A throw or pillow swap. The easiest seasonal change that exists. Keep a stash of seasonal pillow covers (they store flat) and swap them with the season.
- Something that smells right. A candle, a diffuser, or a simmer pot. Scent is the invisible layer of seasonal decor that most people forget.
- A natural element. Whatever the season is offering up outside — bring a little of it in. Branches, flowers, pinecones, shells, whatever grows near you.
- Updated lighting. More candles in winter, fairy lights in summer, warm glow year-round. Lighting is mood.
- One statement piece. A wreath, a centerpiece, a styled vignette. One spot that says "yes, I know what month it is."
What to Invest In vs. What to DIY
Invest in: Good throw blankets, quality pillar candles, and one or two ceramic/wood pieces that work across multiple seasons. You'll use these for years.
DIY or buy cheap: Wreaths (so easy to make), seasonal flowers (grocery store bouquets are fine), and anything your kids will destroy within a week.

Storage Without Losing Your Mind
Seasonal decor only works if you can actually FIND it when the season changes. My system:
- Clear bins, one per season, labeled clearly
- If you didn't use it last year, donate it
- Store bins somewhere accessible, not in the back of the attic behind 47 boxes
- Take a photo of your favorite arrangements so you can recreate them next year without starting from scratch
Whatever you decide, your kid is lucky to have a parent who cares enough to research this thoroughly. That already says a lot.
